Egypt: A Modern Day Revolution! (Respond by Monday, Feb. 21)

Respond by: Monday, Feb. 21

The biggest world news for the past couple weeks has been the revolution going on in Egypt. Thousands of Egyptians are protesting against the current ruler (considered by many a dictator), Mubarak, demanding that he leave office and be replaced with a democratic government. Before the protests in Egypt began, a similar revolution took place in the Northern African country of Tunisia, inspiring many Egyptians to do the same by standing up for their rights.

Respond to these questions:

#1: Read this article to understand WHY Egyptians began protesting. Why were they upset at Mubarak? How were Egyptian citizens being treated? What kind of system were they hoping for? What happened when they didn't receive that type of government?

#2: Check out this picture of Christians protesting Muslims who stopped to pray during the protests (remember, Muslims typically pray to Allah 5 times a day). Reflect on this picture. What do you think about these two religions coming together to try to change a broken government system?

#3: Thursday morning, Egyptian protests were under the impression that Mubarak was going to announce his resignation, or that he was planning to leave his position as leader. However, in his speech this morning, he announced that he was NOT going to resign after all! Click here to watch the video of his speech. THEN, the next day, it was announced that he WOULD resign after all! Reflect on the fact that the Egyptian protesters were successful in their revolution. (What would it feel like to know you have successfully changed or revolutionized your own country? What do you think will happen now? Was this a good idea, bad idea, or both and why? Tell us your thoughts....)

#4: Read the journal of this college student from Boston who was studying abroad in Cairo when the protests were happening. Reflect on what it might have been like to be in Egypt during this time period. (How would you have felt? What would you have done? Do you know or have heard of anyone else who was in Egypt recently? How has this revolution in Egypt affected you?)

Make sure you answer all FOUR questions!!! And keep watching the news, feel free to post any articles or video clips you find with new info, I'm sure there will be new updates every day!

  1. 1. Egyptians were upset at Mubarak because he took away their political, social and economical rights. Police had more power, less constitutional rights, and a lot of censorship. People saw their ruler almost as a dictator, they were hoping for a democratic government in the next elections. When they didn’t receive the type of government they wanted they started to protest and violence erupted in the streets.
    2. It’s beautiful to see two religions as different as these are, coming together and leaving their differences behind, respecting their beliefs. It just warmed my heart to see Christians protecting Muslims with a human shield. What is really disappointing to see is that they come together for such causes, which are protests to end corruption and an unfair government. It does not matter what they believe in at the end of the day they all stand up for their rights.
    3. It would feel amazing to know you have contributed to make a big change in your country. You would feel so proud to know you have done something to improve the future. I think protesting was a good and bad idea, because yes it caused improvement but violence should never be the solution, it will most likely cause less benefits and more bad things; and a lot is risked by it.
    4. I think it would have been really difficult and stressing living in Egypt during all of this. I would have felt scared to not know what would happen next. I believe that in those circumstances I would have stayed indoors and let the entire violence pass by. This revolution in Egypt has made me conscious of what a dictatorship can do. People will do everything to fight for their rights, injustice never lasts forever.

  2. 1.The Egypt people were sad because Mubarak took everything from them including political, social, and economical rights. Police had powers and people saw their ruler almost like a dictator and hope for new elections.
2.Its nice to see this religions being together and sharing everything they have!
3.I think that people protesting and not liking things was a bad idea becuase it caused bad things to countries and to people like VIOLENCE etc..
    4. Its hard living like Egypt because it was very bad for this days living in Egypt's situation. People will fight to get what they wanted and thats really good for them because its good to choose your own rights!

  3. 1. Due to the information in the article we can deduce that Egyptians were suffering a lot due to the circumstances in which they are living. It was said that people lived under emergency law their entire life, allowing the police to have more power than society did. There were many fewer constitutional rights towards the citizens and censorship ruled in every decision made. We can see how so many people have been detained, people that are anchoring a world full of peace, love and understanding but above all a system that knows and understands their weakness and needs. But unfortunately this wasn’t what they got in exchange. They wanted to unseat Mubarak, but his government was to powerful.

    2. Christianity and Islam have been two religions that have always been in complete disagreement. But in this picture we can see how the fight for peace and justice has united two religions that have encountered numerous disputes between one another. Its really amazing to see this encounter, I personally feel that there is still hope for society and for human race. This is specifically what we should do unite ourselves for a purpose, for the better of our world and for our race, no matter religion, sex, or political ideology; we should unite for the sake of our present and our future.

    3. During our lifetime we propose ourselves goals, dreams and desires with the illusion of fulfilling them. Well today Egyptians were filled of hope and dreams... a dream of being free and having their own power. They fought and fought for their goals, they protested for their rights, and finally they achieved what they deserved. In this exact moment their hearts were filled with joy and extreme happiness,to realize that their effort was not in vane, that their strength, perseverance and unity led them to succeed, led them to their freedom!

    4. During this time, being in Egypt seemed very undesirable, due to the protests and riots among the people. This is a harsh situation in which being a non-Egyptian and living there was not a good idea. I would've also felt like ShiSha, curious and scared at the same time. If I was in the time and place in which this event occurred, I would try to stay away from it as much as I could. In revolutions like this it is dangerous to take parts and even when your country is not directly involved, because it can put us in a bad position; like when John told ShiSha that non-Egyptians were not allowed in some areas. This revolution has affected all of us in many ways. Not only as a country but also it has helped us create an awareness that we should stand for what we believe but mostly when we have the right and strength to fight as a country full of unity and hope.

  4. 1. Many Egyptians were upset at Mubarak because he made it clear that he practically was a Dictator. He gave kore power to the police, this mean that sudden changes would be afoot and many of these would resolve in conflict thus, needing a stronger force. He also denied the first amendment, freedom of speech. The Egyptians only wanted a Democratic political party but got a Dictatorship. A Dictatorship where people were treated horribly. They would be harassed, many feared just to go and get a voting sheet. As soon as they found ou that what they wanted was not what they were going to get, they rebelled, followed what was happening in Tunisia.

    2. I believe that this is a great thing what was going on. To actually see that these to different religions joined forces to take down Mubarak really shows that the people were determined and had a goal and they knew that they weren't going to let any thing come in their way of achieving it. Also it shows that apparently, things were SO bad that it forced different religions to unite!

    3. My guess is that this would feel amazing. To help lead your country to success would just be amazing. This was something that Egyptians have wanted for a long time and to know that they accomplished it is amazing. It is even better for them because it is their country and what they have wanted for many years and to have succeeded into everyone putting their diferences aside and just coming together is amazing. What I think will happen now is that they are going to start fresh and this time, they are going to play a bigger role in election. Yes, I do think that they are going to struggle because it is a country that has no official leader and everyone has different thoughts so. I believe that this was a good idea because they did what they needed in a peaceful way. They achieved their lifetime goal and have now a second chance.

    4. If I were in Egypt when this happened, I would probably have had the same strive as many others had. The strive that lead them to success. I would have also probably joined the revolution but im not really sure, I am a little scared of those... I do not know of anyone that was or is in Egypt at the time but if I did, I would really like to talk to that person to learn everything! This revolution has given me hope. It helped me realize that we as human beings, can't loose faith and that we have to fight for what we think is right and to never quit.

  5. [1] Egyptian youth have been frustrated because President Mubarak had taken away they political and economical rights. They wanted a democracy, so they started a campaign for the new elections through Facebook. They wanted the Egyptian youth to get involved in political process. It seems like a better future for them, but Mubarak against their campaign didn't allow them to vote and Egypt stayed as a dictatorship. When the citizens didn't get the type of government the wanted, they started to protest. It turned violent.

[2] It tells you how strongly they wanted a change in the Egyptian government. How to very different religions help each other to achieve their goal.

[3] I'm totally glad that Mubarak has resigned. In a situation like this I would feel a bit scared because it is violent, but if we (the ones that are fighting for something) reached our goal, well I would feel very amazing. Because knowing that you actually changed the political view in your country is glorious. I would feel proud of myself because I'm improving the future of every single citizen of my country.

[4] I would have felt scared or even terrified. Because is a violent revolution, many people were wounded or killed. I agree with Heidi as she said "this revolution in Egypt has made me conscious of what a dictatorship can do." Now people will have a certain knowledge, and will elect a good president. People will learned about this revolution and can do the same if they government don't respect their rights.

  6. 1.Egyptians were upset with Mumbarak because they wanted democracy and once they heard that in november they could vote the were thrilled. But as time past and November got closer thing in the government against Egyptians became worse. And once November came by they voted but felt the whole voting thing was made injustice. so after they turned against the Government.
    2. I feel wonderful of the fact that two different religions came together for one thing. Because people think that Because were different we dont have the same rights, well they are wrong because we all do.
3.i would feel awesome if i were an Egyptians because we made a change in History all alone, just the human raise. Because they all came together as one for one purpose, and this is why i think it was a good idea.
    4. i guess i would join the revolution if i were in egypt at the time because of course the more people are i against one the more chances you have to winn. I did not know anyone who was in Egypt at the time, but only the News of course, and this is because they shut down all transportantion to and from Egypt. this whole revolution affected me in the way that are voices can be heard especially if we all come together as one.

  7. #1: Egyptians were upset because the Mubarak took all of their political and economical rights as Egyptian citizens. They were being treated as if the government was a dictatorship. Egyptians were hoping for a democratic type of government. When they didn't receive their ideal government Egyptians kept protesting even more and things got even more violent!

#2: It shows how strong people from different religions ignore their rivalries to change the government for a better Egyptian future.

#3: It would feel so good because thinking that you changed the way of thinking of a WHOLE country.

#4: I would have felt scared because many people could have been wounded or killed. Things may have gone like the French Revolution that a lot of people died. After all this people would want to have a democratic government with a good leader.

  8. 1. Egyptians began protesting because Mubarak took their political and economical rights. They wanted a democracy, then they notice that they couldn’t be able to vote, that made them upset. The Egyptians clearly wanted Democracy, but they got a Dictatorship. The police got all the power, people wanted to overthrow Mubarak but he was to powerful.

    2. It is very nice to see two different religions coming together, to obtain what they all want. They both left there differences and just respect each other and stop everything just pray all together. We can see of this people dint use violence, they just came together to pray. For me this is a beautiful picture, it is really amazing to see two religions getting together, although they have many different thoughts.

    3. It will feel great to know that after all the protesting and bad moments, you and your country have success. Protesting is a good and bad idea. Protesting can sometimes lead people to violence and bad things. Sometimes protesting is a good idea, because you can make a change in your country. People get together as one voice to establish their point of view, and sometimes they obtain their goal, like in this case.

    4. For me being in a situation like that it would be very stressing and sad. I would felt scared, because in that moment living in Egypt was not a very good idea. Knowing that things can get worse any time, will make me realize that our country was in trouble.

  9. 1. the people were mad with Mubarak because he took everything from them and they wanted to be heard.
2.I think that this is shows us that if the people unit and become anything is possible.
3.I would have felt victorious and great. But this can bring good and bad things, like the change in government and more chaos.
4.I don't want to imagine myself living in there. It has to be a total chaos and violence. I would have gone to a safe place or leave the country, if I could.

  10. #1: evryone in egypt was mad at mubarak because he took all their political and economical rights as citizens in egypt.this people only wanted to have a democrati political party but they got a dictatorship and by being a dictatorship they all were treated badly.

#2: i think it was a very nice thing to do because eventhough they werent the same religion they united to pray for this problem hoping that this could make a change.

#3:i would have been very proud of myself knowing that i did a change for a country.

#4: i have always wanted to go to egypt but right now i cannot imagine how scared i would be if i was there! right now i know of a teacher who used to teached in our school that moved to egypt to give classes and he says he is super scared and that he wishes leave.

  11. 1. The people from Egypt were upset because President Mubarak took everything from them. There was so much violence in the streets because they couldn’t receive the government that they wanted.
    2. The Egyptian Christians did a good job by joining together to protect their Muslim countrymen.
    3. I think that I would feel great that my own country changed because my own country is having a bad time too. I think that things are going to change and that everything is going be okay. I think this is going to be a good idea.
    4. I would felt really sad. I would do something to help those people in Egypt. No, I haven't heard from anyone who was in Egypt recently. It gave me something to think of.

  12. 1. The Eguyptians were protesting because they wanted a change in government. First of all, they were mad at Mubarak because he didn't led the young people to vote, there was also violence and reporters or journalists who were not allowed to be there. The people were seeking democracy, one in which they could vote, have civil rights etc. After the protest there was police violence, stores were shut down, people were beaten etc.
    2. This picture shows that even though there has always been a religious disagreement, we know that different religions can come together and protect each other for the wellness of their country! We can also infere that revolutions can lead to making everyone close!
    3. It would be so awesome to know that you, your family & friends were able to change something together. To change the country for the wellness of everybody! That all of you worked together and succeded and are now part of the world's history! I think that since they are just newbies in the democratic role, in the beggining there are going to be some disagreements and it's going to be kind of difficult! But as they continue to work together I'm sure they will overcome all of their differences and will be happy! I think that this was a great idea, this will help them overcome anything, since now they have freedom of speech etc.
    4. Being in Egypt during the revolution is not a good idea. Some non-Egyptians were not even allowed to be in some places, and if they got involve it could be dangerous for many of them. I would feel kind of scared but I would also like to know what's exactly happening there. I agree with Airined, that this revolution has affected all of us. In good ways, because now we will know that anything is possible and that we have what it takes to change the world,(in a good way).

  13. 1) Egyptian youth were mad at Mubarak because he was taking away almost all their rights. They were treated unfairly and all they wanted was to change the way the government works. Egyptians want a democracy, but Mubarak is considered basically a dictator. They decided to have the courage to vote against how they were being treated but in turned out in fraud, the voting. So they decided to rebel for freedom, just like Tunisia.

    2) This picture is awesome, Christians and Muslims coming together to protest against an unfair government system. It is truely amazing to see these two religions setting their differences aside to fight for what they believe in. This is passion for what they believe is true and for what they deserve. Because they both have a common goal and are helping each other to achieve it.

3)I would be so happy and relieved to have successfully revolutionized my country. After all the things I had to go through, I finally defeated and changed what wat wrong with my country. This can be a fresh start for Egypt and yes this was a good idea. It obviously isn't going to be easy for Egypt to be where they want to be but it's a start.

    4) In her position I would've felt very scared, not knowing what was goin to happen the next day and living in a place of chaos. I would have stayed at the hostel all during the protest except the day I had to go home. That would be the only thing in my mind to just get home safe.

  14. 1. They were mad with Mubarak because he took political and economical rights.
    2. I think it was very nice because they were all unaided iven thought they were not the same religion
    3. I will feel amazing knowing that I did something new for my religion
    4. I will feel very scared I could not imagine my self if i was there I will be dead I wanted to. Go to Egypt someday but right know I don't want to go.

  15. (1)The Egyptians were upset at Mubarak because they were tired of his political system because of various reasons including not having the right to vote or have jobs.People lived under emergency law their entire lives, this meant that the police had more power. Egyptian people were hoping for a democratic system. When they didn't get the type of system they were hoping for they started a revolution.

(2)I think this picture shows how bad they really want to change the system of government in Egypt. They have come together to end with this horrible system, and not give up until they get what they want. It shows how we can all work together to succeed no matter from which religion were are.

(3)I think that the idea to rebell is a good one since you can't achieve anything if you don't try to or put yourself a goal. To know that you achieved that goal and revolutionized your own country would feel amazing and very fulfilling, it would motivate me to keep doing things to better my country. After this, Egyptians will have to keep working to reach their goal 100% now they are just half way through it!

    (4) If I was in Egypt when all of this was happening I would have been so scared, and I would try to stay completely out of it, and not even try to find out what was really going on, unlike ShiSha. I really haven't heard of anyone else who has been in Egypt recently but I imagine it would be really scary, especially when they were without any communication. With all these problems happening in Egypt it is really unsafe to visit, and tourists can't go there for now.

  16. 1. well the egyptinas were really upset because Murabak took all the political and economic rights. People lived under emergency law their entire life, allowing the police to have more power than society did.there was alot of violence in the strest and in the country because they didn;t have the backup or the help from the politics and police that they need.

    2. that picture show the need, and how bad they want the goverment system to change, and how bad they want an extreme change. because religions are getting together to fight this to change this so they could all have better's life's. And show the needs that all the people are passing trou

3 well am glad he actually resing, because those people were force to fight for their right's, and that people were living in horrible condition's, their life was ,misserrable. But am against the violence and protest because many times it just bring more problems and more violence. But in my opinion if i was citizen i would feel amazing victorious because we finally achieve something by putting our differences as people away to fight our right's and to get a better way of living.
4.living in egypt at this time was so dangerou's if i was there i could'nt sleep at all, i be scaer, freaking my head up! i bee so nerveous because you never know wat is going to happend of wath could happend to you. could not imagine my self if i was there I will be dead I wanted to. living there in those condition is to difficult so harsh and mostly to us chikldren;s and young adult.

  17. 1-Egyptians were upset with Mubarack because he had taken almost all of their rights away. Mubarak gave more power to the police and less rights for them. All the Egyptians wanted was a democracy sice they already saw their ruler as a dictator. When they saw that this wasn't happening they started to rebel.
2- To see this picture and know that it actually occured is an amazing. Knowing that these two different religions joined together for a common cause is a great thing and it also shows how strong their determination was to get their point across.
3- It would feel so amazing to know that I changed the country. I would be so happy because I did something to help it. I think that now they wiil just get things stable and start things fresh. I think this was a good idea because if things were that bad they needed to do something about. I think they will have to stuggle a bit, but eventually if they continue on the right track thing might get better.
4- If I would have been in Egypt during this time I would have been scared and very stressed. I would have stayed some where were it was safe and try not to go out much. I don't know anyone who was there. This revolution has taught me that if you really believe in something and stand up for it you can accomplish what you want and also that people go far for what is right.

  18. #1: Why Egyptians were upset at Mubarak? They saw that he was a corrupt and perverse dictator. Who didn't give if people were okay or not, especially for the young who are crucial for human survival. Egyptian citizens were being treated like trash: women were excluded, young were ignored, and men were the only ones with "power". They hoping for democracy and thought they had it but Mubarak actually tricked them. When they didn't receive that type of government they got influenced by Tunisia's revolution and they did one as well.
#2: I think its beautiful and reflects so many different things, like trust, friendship, and worried for your partners or friends. these two religions coming together to try to change a broken government system was the best thing to do on my list.
#3: revolutionized your own country if this is in your goals and you put all you got, you are going to accomplish them and be a very successful person. He would ether back stab all Egyptians in Blood Bath Civil War or Would just resign and be happy. Depends on his future actions would lead to this conclusion on good or bad idea.
#4: The journal of this college student from Boston who was studying abroad in Cairo when the protests were happening during this time period in Egypt I would have stayed calm and think of many solutions just in case if anything occurs. I'd been normal because I have God and his holy angles guarding me as well as the holy spirit. I'd just stay in the hotel reading, studying, or socializing. Nope, though my cosine and aunt were going to go to Africa again. Revolution in Egypt affected me because I WAS GOING TO GO TO EGYPT BUT I CAN'T ANYMORE!! Egyptian treasures and memories destroyed!! This is so painful! And yes I'm crying right now!

  19. 1.The Egyptians got mad at President Mubarack, because they were being victims of corruption. The Egyptians were treated unfairly, because they couldn’t find jobs and they didn’t have rights. The Egyptians were hoping for a democratic government. The Egyptians got inspired of what happened in Tunisia they are going to fight for their rights.

2.In the picture they are both letting their differences aside and thinking what’s right for each other. If they want to accomplish what they want they have to stick together, because “two is better than one (8)”.

3.Knowing that the Egyptians have now accomplished what they want they would feel happy and proud that they got what they wanted. I think that many of the Egyptians would feel like I mentioned before proud. Now that the President has resigned Egyptians will have some rights and to have their jobs. I think that this is bad idea and a good idea at the same time, it’s bad because many people get heart and now that the Egyptian know that they could have what they want if in the future they don’t like something that the President did they would protest against it again and could end bad. It is good, because now the Egyptians can have their jobs and have their rights.

4.Being in Egypt during that time period would’ve been really hard. I would felt unsecure and worried of what was going to happen if the protesting continued how far the police and the government can take their actions? I haven’t heard of anyone else from Egypt. The same way the Egyptians got inspired by Tunisia to protest against their rights, the same way other countries can do the same. This could get real serious.

  20. 1.The Egypt people were sad and mad because Mubarak took mostly all rigths from them like; political, social, and economical.
2.Its very awesome to see this religions being together and sharing everything they have and not fighting or using violence. This tells you that they raelly want a change.
3.I think that the protesting is good but it isn't gonna be easy to change from a dicdatorship to a democracy, it would take time.
    4. living in egypt in this day would be very dangerous and bad because you wouldn't know what is going to happen. if i would be living in egypt i would be scare but i would still fight for what i want.
